Joint Commission Accreditation is the highest voluntary quality designation a hospice organization can earn. It requires rigorous on-site evaluation of clinical processes, patient safety protocols, staff training standards, documentation practices, and leadership accountability. Not all hospice agencies choose to pursue it — we did, because we believe our patients deserve the gold standard. Our accreditation is renewed through periodic re-evaluation, ensuring continuous quality improvement.
When a patient's symptoms escalate at 2 a.m., a family should not be connected to a voicemail system or an after-hours answering service. Our 24/7 on-call line connects directly to a licensed nurse — immediately, every hour of every day. This isn't just a regulatory checkbox for us; it is a foundational part of how we define safety and support for the families we serve.
Every patient enrolled with Westlake Village Hospice receives the full interdisciplinary team from the very first day of care: registered nurse, hospice physician, licensed clinical social worker, chaplain, certified home health aide, and hospice volunteer. Many hospice agencies build the team gradually — we start with the complete team because we believe every day matters.

We believe a patient's dignity is inseparable from their ability to communicate freely in their own language, especially during end-of-life care.
Grief does not end at the moment of passing. The Medicare Hospice Benefit includes bereavement counseling for all family members for up to 13 months following a patient's death — a benefit many families don't know about. Our bereavement coordinator reaches out proactively to surviving family members, offering individual counseling, support groups, and connection to community resources.
Selecting a hospice agency is one of the most consequential decisions a family will ever make — and it must often be made quickly, under enormous emotional pressure. Here is what we recommend every family evaluate when comparing hospice providers:
All hospice agencies that accept Medicare patients must be Medicare-certified by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and licensed by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). Certification is the minimum bar — it does not differentiate quality.
Voluntary accreditation from The Joint Commission or the Community Health Accreditation Partner (CHAP) signals a commitment to quality above and beyond regulatory requirements. Accreditation involves rigorous, unannounced site visits and evaluation against hundreds of quality standards. Most hospice agencies are not accredited — look for those that are.
Ask the agency: 'If my loved one has a symptom crisis at 2 a.m., who will I reach if I call your after-hours number?' The answer should be: a licensed nurse, immediately available, with access to the patient's medical record. If the answer involves voicemail, an answering service, or a callback policy measured in hours — that is a red flag.
The Medicare Hospice Benefit covers an interdisciplinary team: RN, LVN, hospice physician, social worker, chaplain, home health aide, and volunteer. Ask when each of those team members will make their first visit. Some agencies deprioritize non-nursing disciplines — families should confirm that chaplain, social work, and aide visits begin promptly.
Terminal illness rarely provides advance notice. Ask whether the agency can admit a patient and initiate care on the same day as enrollment. Same-day admission requires coordinated logistics — the ability to order and deliver medications, durable medical equipment, and schedule a nurse visit all within hours.

Same-day admission is available across all three counties we serve — Orange, Los Angeles, and Ventura. From the time you call and confirm enrollment, our team can have a nurse at the patient's home within hours. Our admissions process is simple: a brief clinical assessment by phone, physician certification, and consent forms — typically completed within 2–4 hours. We carry equipment (hospital beds, oxygen, medications) and can deliver immediately following enrollment.
Yes. The Medicare Hospice Benefit is a federal program — it applies identically in every county and every state. Ventura County residents enrolled in Medicare Part A have access to the full Medicare Hospice Benefit: 100% coverage of all nursing visits, all medications related to the terminal diagnosis, all medical equipment, social work, chaplain, aide services, and 13 months of bereavement counseling. There are no deductibles and no co-pays for Medicare hospice patients.
Yes. Hospice care follows the patient — not the building. We actively serve patients in skilled nursing facilities, assisted living residences, board and care homes, and independent living communities across all three counties. Our hospice team coordinates closely with the facility's nursing staff, medical director, and social workers to ensure seamless, integrated care. Patients in SNFs or ALFs receive all the same hospice services as patients in private homes — nursing, aide, social work, chaplain, medications, and equipment — all covered by Medicare.
Our clinical and administrative team provides care in English, Spanish, Arabic, Farsi (Persian), Armenian, Tagalog, Korean, Hindi/Gujarati, Russian, and Mandarin Chinese.
